Little Feat is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. The band’s music combines elements of rock, blues, R&B, funk, and country, creating a distinctive sound that has garnered them a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.
The band was founded by singer-songwriter and guitarist Lowell George, who had previously been a member of Frank Zappa’s band, The Mothers of Invention. Alongside George, the original lineup of Little Feat included keyboardist Bill Payne, bassist Roy Estrada, drummer Richie Hayward, and guitarist Paul Barrère.
Little Feat‘s self-titled debut album was released in 1971, featuring a mix of blues, rock, and country influences. While the album received positive reviews, it didn’t achieve commercial success. However, the band’s reputation as a dynamic live act began to grow, thanks to their tight musicianship and improvisational skills.

In 1972, Little Feat released their sophomore album, “Sailin’ Shoes,” which showcased the band’s eclectic musical style and included fan favorites such as the title track and “Willin’.”
Tragedy struck in 1979 when Lowell George died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 34. His death was a devastating blow to the band, and many thought that Little Feat would disband. However, the remaining members decided to carry on in George’s memory, recruiting new members and continuing to tour and record.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Little Feat released several albums and underwent numerous lineup changes. The band’s music continued to evolve, incorporating elements of jazz, funk, and world music while staying true to their rootsy, Southern-influenced sound.
In 1988, Little Feat received a significant boost when their song “Let It Roll” became a surprise hit, earning them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The success of the album of the same name revitalized the band’s career and introduced their music to a new generation of listeners.
Little Feat has continued to tour extensively, earning a reputation as one of the best live acts in the business. Their concerts are known for their high energy and improvisational jams, with the band members displaying their virtuosity and camaraderie on stage.
In 2008, the group released Join the Band, an album featuring collaborations with Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, Bob Seger, Béla Fleck, Brooks & Dunn, Chris Robinson, Vince Gill, Mike Gordon, and Inara George.
Little Feat remains a beloved and influential band, admired for their musical innovation and enduring appeal. With a rich catalog of songs and a dedicated fan base, they continue to inspire and entertain audiences around the world.
