GRAMMY award-winning Rascal Flatts is a highly successful American country music trio that gained widespread fame for blending country with pop and rock elements. The group, formed in Columbus, Ohio, in 1999, consists of lead vocalist Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus, and guitarist Joe Don Rooney. They became one of the most commercially successful country bands of the 2000s and 2010s, known for their distinctive harmonies and catchy, crossover-friendly sound.
Early Life and Formation
Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus are cousins who both grew up in Ohio. They moved to Nashville to pursue music careers separately. Jay DeMarcus first joined the Christian music group East to West and worked as a session musician and producer in Nashville. During this time, he reconnected with his cousin, Gary LeVox, who also moved to Nashville to try his luck in country music.
The two cousins started performing together at a Nashville nightclub when they decided to form a band. Joe Don Rooney, who was playing guitar in Chely Wright‘s band at the time, joined the duo after they met him at the same club. With this, Rascal Flatts was born.

Breakthrough and Early Success (2000-2005)
The band signed with Lyric Street Records, a Disney-owned label, in 1999. In 2000, they released their self-titled debut album, Rascal Flatts, which included hits like “Prayin’ for Daylight” and “I’m Movin’ On.” The album quickly propelled the group to fame. “I’m Movin’ On,” in particular, won the Academy of Country Music’s Song of the Year award in 2002, and the band was named the ACM’s Top New Vocal Duo or Group.
Their second album, Melt (2002), featured their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, “These Days.” The success of Melt further solidified their place in the country music scene.
Mainstream Crossover and Major Success (2006-2010)
Rascal Flatts’ third studio album, Feels Like Today (2004), marked a turning point in their career, propelling them to crossover success. The album featured hit singles like “Bless the Broken Road,” which spent five weeks at No. 1 on the country charts and won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song. The band’s blend of pop-influenced country appealed to a broad audience beyond traditional country fans.
Their fourth album, Me and My Gang (2006), became their biggest commercial success. It debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts, driven by the success of singles like “What Hurts the Most,” which became a crossover hit on both the country and adult contemporary charts.
During this period, Rascal Flatts became known for their energetic live performances and embarked on multiple sold-out tours. They became one of the highest-grossing touring acts of the decade.
Continued Success and Album Releases (2010-2020)
Over the next several years, Rascal Flatts continued to release successful albums and singles, including Unstoppable (2009), which featured hits like “Here Comes Goodbye” and Nothing Like This (2010). They moved from Lyric Street to Big Machine Records in 2010 and continued to release chart-topping songs such as “Banjo,” “Easy,” and “Come Wake Me Up.”
The group released Rewind in 2014, which included the hit title track, and Back to Us in 2017, which marked a return to their signature sound.
Farewell Tour and Legacy
In 2020, Rascal Flatts announced they were going on a farewell tour to celebrate their 20 years in the music industry. However, the tour was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in early 2021, the band revealed that they would not reschedule the tour, marking an end to their time as an active band.
Though they disbanded without the planned farewell tour, Rascal Flatts left behind an indelible legacy, with more than 27 million albums sold, and 33.7 million digital downloads, multiple awards, and 17 No. 1 singles since their debut in 2000. Their music, characterized by polished production, emotional ballads, and pop sensibility, remains influential in the country music landscape.
Reunion
On October 1, 2024, Rascal Flatts announced that they would reunite to commemorate their twenty-fifth anniversary with a 21-date tour entitled the “Life Is A Highway Tour”, set to commence in February 2025. Their goal is to reconnect with the fans, their music, and each other after a five-year break as a band. They said they are returning to the road with ‘renewed energy and greater appreciation’.
Influences
The band has cited Alabama, the Eagles, Shenandoah, George Jones, Earl Thomas Conley, Keith Whitley, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Jeff Beck and Vince Gill as some of their most prominent musical influences.
Among the artists who claim the group as an influence on their own music are Hunter Hayes and Dan + Shay.
