In 1997, he recorded a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Paint It Black” on the multi-artist tribute album, Stone Country: Country Artists Perform the Songs of the Rolling Stones.
In a review of Sticks and Stones, Alanna Nash noted that Lawrence had a physical and musical resemblance to Alan Jackson. His singing voice has also been described as a “smooth baritone” and a “warm baritone” with “effortless, emotional delivery”.
