Kelis Rogers (born August 21, 1979), known mononymously as Kelis, is an American singer-songwriter and chef.
Born, like so many soul singers, to a heavily religious family, Harlem-bred vocalist Kelis (kuh-LEESE) learned jazz following her father in his performances across America as a saxophone-playing Pentecostal Minister. By the age of 13, she was already a cover model for teen magazines and in a band of her own, BLU. This launched her into the spotlight, and she landed a gig on the RZA side project, Gravediggaz.

Kelis left her parents’ home at 16, and by the age 18, she had teamed up with production duo, the Neptunes. In mid-1999, Kelis was singing alongside rap troublemaker, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, on his cut, “Got Your Money,” and her signature technicolor spiraled Afro sparked critics’ interests. The Neptunes convinced Virgin records to release her first album, “Kaleidoscope,” in December 1999. It was an instant success. She released her second full-length, “Wanderland,” in 2001.

2003’s “Tasty” followed and yielded the Top Ten hit, “Milkshake,” another Neptunes production. In 2006, her fourth album, “Kelis Was Here,” was released through Jive.
Her brooding vocals blend sensible R&B additives, and the hip-hop layers are funky.
Kelis has been recognized at the Brit Awards, Q Awards, NME Awards, and Grammy Awards. Her musical output as a lead and featured artist encompasses various genres.
She has collaborated with R&B and hip-hop acts, including Nas (whom she married in 2005), Busta Rhymes, Outkast, and Puff Daddy, electronic and dance producers such as Calvin Harris, Disclosure, Giorgio Moroder, Timo Maas, and Richard X, pop and rock acts such as Enrique Iglesias, Duran Duran, and No Doubt, and indie and alternative musicians including Björk and Dave Sitek.
Kelis has collaborated with producers, such as Dallas Austin, André 3000, Rockwilder, and Raphael Saadiq.
She has collaborated with other major artists, such as will.i.am, Cee-Lo Green, Max Martin, and Scott Storch.
Kelis has sold more than 6 million records worldwide and has had particular success in the United Kingdom, where ten of her singles have peaked within the top ten of the UK Singles Chart.
Her discography includes six studio albums, one live album, one compilation album, 39 singles (including 21 as a featured artist), and 29 music videos.
