Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band’s original lineup consisted of Dave Pirner (vocals, guitar), Dan Murphy (guitar), Karl Mueller (bass), and Pat Morley (drums). Over the years, the lineup underwent some changes, with Pirner and Murphy being the consistent members.
The band’s early years were marked by their punk rock roots, but they soon evolved into a more alternative rock sound with elements of punk, grunge, and folk. Soul Asylum gained attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s with albums like “Hang Time” (1988) and “And the Horse They Rode In On” (1990), but it was their breakthrough album, “Grave Dancers Union” (1992), that propelled them to mainstream success.
“Grave Dancers Union” featured the Grammy Award nominated single “Runaway Train,” which became their signature song and reached the top of the charts. The album also included other notable tracks like “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove,” solidifying Soul Asylum‘s place in the alternative rock scene of the 1990s.

Following the success of “Grave Dancers Union,” Soul Asylum released several more albums, including “Let Your Dim Light Shine” (1995) and “Candy from a Stranger” (1998). However, they faced challenges, including the tragic death of bassist Karl Mueller from cancer in 2005.
Despite the loss, Soul Asylum continued to perform and record. They released albums such as “The Silver Lining” (2006) and “Delayed Reaction” (2012), showcasing their enduring musical talent and resilience.
In November and December 2006, they opened for Cheap Trick on that band’s American tour. On March 10, 2007, Soul Asylum joined Cyndi Lauper, Mint Condition, and Lifehouse in a concert to benefit Wain McFarlane, the leader of the reggae band Ipso Facto, to help pay for the expenses of a kidney transplant.
Soul Asylum has maintained a loyal fan base and garnered critical acclaim for their introspective lyrics, catchy melodies, and energetic live performances. Their music often explores themes of love, loss, and existentialism, resonating with audiences across generations.
Soul Asylum remains active, with Dave Pirner leading the band and continuing to tour and record new music, carrying on their legacy as influential figures in the alternative rock genre.
The band has been described musically as alternative rock, grunge, country rock, punk rock, pop rock, post-grunge, and Indie rock.
Their discography includes 12 studio albums, two live albums, five compilation albums, two extended plays (EPs), 22 singles, and 17 music videos.
