His stage name is derived from mispronunciations of his surname, Chibueze, meaning “God is king” in Igbo.
In 2014, Shaboozey founded the production company V Picture Films and released his first single, “Jeff Gordon”. He was signed to Republic Records in 2017 after catching their attention with singles “Starfoxx” and “Robert Plant”, and released his debut studio album, Lady Wrangler, the following year.
Shaboozey started gaining attention in the music industry with the release of his singles on various streaming platforms. His music often blends genres, creating a unique sound that sets him apart from other artists. He draws inspiration from a wide range of artists and bands, which is evident in his innovative approach to music production. His music combines hip-hop, country, rock, and Americana. He gained attention for “Start a Riot” with Duckwrth, from the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018.
His second studio album, Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die, was released in October 2022 through Empire.
His third studio album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, was released on May 31, 2024, which he will promote with headlining shows in the US, as well as a slot as an opening act for Jessie Murph on tour. Also in 2024, he collaborated with Beyoncé on two tracks from her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. He subsequently rose to prominence with the single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”.
Though his earlier music had more of a trap influence, his later songs have more of a folk-pop sound with acoustic guitar. In an interview with ColorsxStudios, Shaboozey cites the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin as influences, as well as Martin Scorsese films, such as Taxi Driver. Other influences include Fela Kuti, Clipse, Roger Waters, the Backstreet Boys, Pharrell, Missy Elliott, Lead Belly, and Johnny Cash
One of his breakout tracks, “Beverly Hills,” showcased his ability to merge rap with rock elements, and it quickly gained popularity online. This track exemplifies his talent for storytelling and his knack for catchy melodies. The success of “Beverly Hills” helped him build a loyal fanbase and attracted the attention of major record labels.
Shaboozey‘s style is characterized by his fusion of different musical genres. He often combines rap with rock and alternative music, creating a sound that is both fresh and nostalgic. His lyrics are reflective and often deal with themes of ambition, personal struggle, and the pursuit of success.
