MAGIC! is a Canadian reggae fusion band formed in 2012 in Toronto. The group was created by lead vocalist Nasri Atweh, who had a background in music production and songwriting, and guitarist Mark Pelli. They later recruited Alex Tanas on drums and Ben Spivak on bass to complete the lineup. The band drew inspiration from reggae, pop, and R&B, creating a unique sound that set them apart in the music industry.

Nasri, who had achieved success as part of the songwriting duo The Messengers, teamed up with Mark Pelli to create songs with reggae rhythms. Their shared vision led to the creation of MAGIC!, with the idea of blending reggae and pop influences.

Breakthrough Success with “Rude” (2014)

MAGIC! rose to international fame in 2014 with their debut single, “Rude.” The catchy reggae-pop track topped the charts in several countries, including the United States, Canada, and the UK. “Rude” spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, establishing MAGIC! as a global sensation.

Their debut album, “Don’t Kill the Magic,” released in June 2014, was a commercial success, reaching the Top 10 in multiple countries. The album featured other hits like “Let Your Hair Down” and showcased the band’s reggae-inspired sound.

Magic! was among the performers at the 15th Annual Latin Grammy Awards held on November 20, 2014. Marc Anthony joined the band on stage for a special performance of “Rude”.

On November 23, 2014, Wyclef Jean and Magic! performed together at the 42nd American Music Awards.

Collaborations and Continued Success (2015–2017)

In 2015, MAGIC! collaborated with other artists, including Shakira on the song “Cut Me Deep” and with Jamaican artist Sean Paul on “Lay You Down Easy” (2016). These collaborations reinforced their reggae influences and broadened their appeal.

From February until June 2015, Magic! opened for Maroon 5 in North America and Europe on their Maroon V Tour. The band also had additional solo gigs.

In March 2015, Magic! won two Juno Awards – for Breakthrough Group of the Year and Single of the Year, out of five nominations. Adam Messinger won the Juno Award for Producer of the Year.

The band released their second album, “Primary Colours,” in 2016. The album included singles such as “Red Dress” and “No Regrets.” While it didn’t achieve the same massive success as their debut, it demonstrated the band’s evolving sound and maturity as artists.

Exploring New Directions (2018–2020)

In 2018, MAGIC! released their third studio album, “Expectations.” This album saw the band experimenting with different sounds, incorporating more pop and R&B elements into their music. Tracks like “Kiss Me” and “Motivation” showcased their versatility, although the album received mixed reviews.

During this time, MAGIC! maintained a steady presence in the music industry, performing at various festivals and events worldwide.

Lineup Changes and New Music (2021–Present)

In 2021, the band experienced a lineup change, with Alex Tanas (drummer) and Ben Spivak (bassist) leaving the group. Despite the changes, MAGIC! continued to create and release music. In 2022, they released singles such as “Inner Love Energy” and teased the possibility of a new album.

Nasri has remained a driving force behind the band, contributing to both songwriting and vocals. The group continues to blend reggae fusion with pop elements, catering to their loyal fan base while exploring new creative directions.

Legacy and Influence

MAGIC! is best known for introducing reggae fusion to mainstream pop audiences. Their debut single, “Rude,” became a cultural phenomenon, and the band’s work has inspired a resurgence of interest in reggae-inspired pop music. Their global appeal and collaborations with prominent artists have solidified their reputation as genre innovators.
