It is the first salsa album in history to debut in Billboard’s Top 200 and reach the number one position on both Hot Latin Tracks and the Top Latin 50 at the same time. As with his second album, it was certified gold in the US and Puerto Rico. “Contra La Corriente” received “Billboard” awards for “Male Tropical Album of the Year” and “Hot Latin Track of the Year” (Y Hubo Alguien) in 1998 and was voted one of TIME Magazine’s “Top Ten Albums of the Year” (1997).

On Broadway, Marc Anthony melded his two ambitions into one spectacular role. Alongside the legendary Ruben Blades and Puerto Rico’s own Ednita Nazario, Marc starred in Paul Simon‘s “The Capeman.” “The Capeman” marked the first time a Broadway musical with a Latino theme featured a predominantly Latino cast; it was history in the making. Though the show had a limited run, critics lauded the artist’s performance.
Upon the closing of “The Capeman,” Marc recorded the theme song to “The Mask of Zorro,” alongside Australian superstar Tina Arena.
