GRAMMY award-winning Slayer is an American thrash metal band formed in 1981 by Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, with vocalist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo. The band sold 5 million albums in the United States from 1991 to 2013, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and over 20 million worldwide.

Slayer is considered one of the “big four” of thrash metal groups along with Anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth and has earned six gold certifications and one multi-platinum plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Their first two albums, Show No Mercy (1983) and Hell Awaits (1985), did not chart in the US. After signing to Def Jam Recordings, Rick Rubin produced Reign in Blood (1986), which helped Slayer break into the Billboard 200 for the first time.

After South of Heaven (1988), the band signed to Rubin’s new label, Def American, and released Seasons in the Abyss (1990). After the album was released, Lombardo departed Slayer and was replaced by Paul Bostaph.

1994’s Divine Intervention, the first album to feature Bostaph, peaked at number eight in the US, the band’s best chart performance at the time. Bostaph left the band due to an injury and was replaced by former member Lombardo.

Christ Illusion (2006) was Slayer‘s most successful effort, debuting at number five in the US and winning two Grammy Awards.

Also in 2006, Slayer played at the Reads Festival along with others, including Pearl Jam, My Chemical Romance, Bullet for My Valentine, Less Than Jake, Taking Back Sunday, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Fallout Boy, Franz Ferdinand, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The band has performed more than 1,800 concerts throughout their career.

In January 2018, they announced that it would embark on a farewell tour, which took place from May 2018 to November 2019, after which the band disbanded. Slayer later announced their reunion in February 2024.

Their discography includes twelve studio albums, three live albums, a box set, six music videos, two extended plays and a cover album.
