Railroad Earth is a bluegrass-influenced Americana band formed in Stillwater, New Jersey in 2001. The band’s music blends elements of progressive bluegrass, folk, rock, country, jazz, and other Americana influences. The band takes its name from the Jack Kerouac prose poem “October in the Railroad Earth“.
After rehearsing and recording a five-song demo, the band recorded The Black Bear Sessions, which was released in June 2001. The band was approached by Sugar Hill Records and offered a record deal on the spot.

In 2002, Railroad Earth released their follow-up album, Bird in a House, featuring songs like, “Like A Buddha,” “Mighty River,” and the album’s title track. The band continued to tour and release albums, including “Elko” in 2006 and “Amen Corner” in 2008.
In 2009, drummer Johnny Grubb announced his departure from the band, and Andrew Altman was named as his successor. The members of Railroad Earth have also released numerous solo albums, including a duet album with mandolinist Todd Collins in 2009.
In 2014, the band’s fifth album, Last of the Outlaws, was released, featuring new songs from Sheaffer and Skehan.
In 2018, Railroad Earth released a 7″ vinyl EP called Railroad Earth: The John Denver Letters, which included lyrics penned by John Denver with music composed by Sheaffer and performed by the band. In 2018, Andy Goessling died of cancer, and the band has settled on a new touring ensemble.
The band announced a full-length studio album titled All For The Song, due to be released in 2020.
