GRAMMY award-winning Nickel Creek, an acclaimed progressive bluegrass trio, was formed in 1989 in Southern California. The group consists of siblings Sara Watkins (fiddle, vocals) and Sean Watkins (guitar, vocals), along with Chris Thile (mandolin, vocals). The members were introduced to bluegrass music at a young age and began performing together as children. Their sound, while rooted in traditional bluegrass, evolved to incorporate elements of folk, classical, jazz, and pop.
Breakthrough with “Nickel Creek”
In 2000, the band released their self-titled major-label debut album, produced by Alison Krauss. The album received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to bluegrass and was a commercial success, earning Nickel Creek two Grammy nominations. Tracks like “The Lighthouse’s Tale” showcased their instrumental virtuosity and storytelling ability.

Critical Success and Evolution
Nickel Creek continued their ascent with the release of “This Side” (2002), which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Their 2005 album “Why Should the Fire Die?” marked a further departure from traditional bluegrass, exploring more introspective themes and a modern acoustic sound. It solidified their reputation as trailblazers in the acoustic music scene.
Hiatus and Solo Ventures
After extensive touring and recording, Nickel Creek announced a hiatus in 2007 to allow members to pursue individual projects. Chris Thile formed the critically acclaimed Punch Brothers and collaborated on various classical and bluegrass ventures. Sara Watkins released solo albums, gaining recognition as a singer-songwriter, while Sean Watkins also explored solo work and collaborative efforts, including the Watkins Family Hour.
Reunion and “A Dotted Line”
During their 2002 and 2003 tour, Nickel Creek opened five shows for John Mayer in November 2002 and toured with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings earlier in the year. In 2003, Nickel Creek appeared on the Béla Fleck and the Flecktones album Little Worlds.
Their seven-month Farewell (For Now) Tour started in April 2007 and ended in November. The tour featured guest appearances by Glen Phillips, Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Bruce Molsky, Bela Fleck, Tom Brosseau and Tift Merritt, among others.
In 2014, Nickel Creek reunited to celebrate their 25th anniversary with the release of “A Dotted Line”, their first studio album in nine years. The album, praised for its blend of nostalgia and innovation, featured songs like “Destination” and highlighted the group’s continued relevance in the music world.
Influence and Legacy
Nickel Creek is credited with bringing bluegrass and acoustic music to a broader audience, influencing a new generation of musicians. Their seamless blend of genres and technical mastery redefined the possibilities of acoustic string band music.
Recent Activity
The band went on tour and opened eleven shows for Lyle Lovett in the summer of 2000 and appeared on Austin City Limits in January 2001 with Dolly Parton.
Nickel Creek remains a beloved act in the acoustic and progressive bluegrass community. They continue to perform intermittently, drawing audiences with their intricate arrangements, heartfelt lyrics, and dynamic live shows.
