Grace VanderWaal is an American singer-songwriter and ukulele player who rose to fame after winning the 11th season of the reality television competition “America’s Got Talent” (AGT) in 2016. She was born on January 15, 2004, in Lenexa, Kansas, United States.

VanderWaal developed an interest in music at a young age and began writing songs when she was just three years old. She learned to play the ukulele, which would become her signature instrument, and started performing at local open-mic nights and talent competitions in her hometown of Suffern, New York.

In 2015, VanderWaal began to record song covers and original songs, accompanying herself on ukulele, and post them on her YouTube channel. She includes among her musical influences such artists as Jason Mraz, Twenty-One Pilots and Katy Perry.

In 2016, at the age of 12, VanderWaal auditioned for “America’s Got Talent” with an original song titled “I Don’t Know My Name.” Her unique voice, heartfelt lyrics, and impressive ukulele skills captivated both the audience and the judges, earning her the “Golden Buzzer” from Howie Mandel, which sent her straight to the live shows. Throughout the competition, VanderWaal continued to showcase her talent by performing her original songs, winning the hearts of viewers with tracks like “Beautiful Thing” and “Clay.” Simon Cowell called VanderWaal “the next Taylor Swift.”

AGT‘s video of VanderWaal’s audition has drawn more than 100 million views and was ranked the No. 5 trending YouTube video of 2016.

VanderWaal again performed “I Don’t Know My Name” at the September 14 finale results episode, then introduced a performance by Stevie Nicks, who compared her own style with VanderWaal’s. At the end of the broadcast, Grace VanderWaal was announced as the season 11 winner. VanderWaal’s authentic style, maturity beyond her years, and undeniable talent propelled her to victory, making her the second female winner and the second child act to win AGT.

Following her win, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records and released her debut EP, “Perfectly Imperfect,” which included her AGT audition song, “I Don’t Know My Name.” The EP debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 chart, making VanderWaal the youngest person to debut in the top 10 with an EP.

In 2017, Grace VanderWaal released her debut studio album, “Just the Beginning,” featuring original songs like “Moonlight” and “So Much More Than This.” The album received positive reviews and further established her as a rising star in the music industry.

By 2018, VanderWaal had accumulated eight million followers, and by 2024, she had more than thirteen million followers on social media. As of 2024, her Instagram account has more than six million followers, her YouTube channel has more than three million subscribers, and her Facebook page has more than one million followers.
