Crowder was born in Texarkana, Texas, and grew up listening to a variety of music genres, including Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, and Bill Gaither. He attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he began his musical career. In 1995, he started University Baptist Church with a friend named Chris Seay. The church quickly became known for its innovative worship services and contemporary music.

In 1996, Crowder formed the David Crowder Band. The band released its first album, Can You Hear Us?, in 1999.
