Charles Kent Wilson, professionally known as Charlie Wilson and also known as Uncle Charlie, was born on January 29, 1953, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Growing up in a musical family, Wilson was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a minister, and he began singing in church choirs. Along with his brothers Ronnie and Robert, Charlie formed The Gap Band in the late 1960s. The group’s name was derived from three streets in their hometown of Tulsa: Greenwood, Archer, and Pine.

The Gap Band became known for their energetic performances and a string of hits throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Some of their most famous songs include “Outstanding,” “Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me),” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” and “Early in the Morning.” The band played a crucial role in shaping the sound of 1980s funk music.
After The Gap Band disbanded in 1989, Charlie Wilson faced personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse and homelessness. However, with determination and support from his wife, Mahin Tat, whom he married in 1995, Wilson turned his life around and began focusing on his solo career.
