GRAMMY award-winning America is a rock band that was formed in London in 1970.

Formed in 1970 by the offspring of American service personnel stationed in the UK, America comprised Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. Heavily influenced by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, they employed similarly strong counter-harmonies backed by acoustic guitar.

The Ian Samwell-produced single, “A Horse With No Name,” proved a massive UK Top 5 hit, ironically outselling any single by Crosby, Stills & Nash, and sounding more like Neil Young. With backing by Warner Brothers Records, and management by former UK “underground” disc jockey Jeff Dexter, the single went to the top of the US charts, immediately establishing the band as a top act.

The debut album “America,” which topped the US charts for five weeks, fit perfectly into the soft-rock style of the period and paved the way for a series of further US Top 10 hits, including “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” and “Lonely People.”

1972 seemed to be their year, but they never again reached quite the success of their debut. They did, however, have a number-one hit with “Sister Golden Hair” in 1975. Five years after their debut, Dan Peek left the band to pursue a solo career. America hit the U.S. top 10 once again in 1982 with the single “You Can Do Magic” off of their “View From The Ground” album.

After releasing “America in Concert” in the summer of 1985, the group continued to tour successfully into the ’90s and released “Human Nature” in 1998.

America won a Grammy Award in 1972 for Best New Artist.
