LATIN GRAMMY award-winning Elida Reyna was born on August 17, 1972, in San Antonio, Texas. At the age of eight, her family relocated to Mercedes, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, seeking a better environment and to be closer to her ailing grandmother. Growing up, Reyna was deeply influenced by Tejano music legends such as Roberto Pulido, La Mafia, Grupo Mazz, and Laura Canales. Canales, in particular, inspired Reyna by demonstrating that women could succeed in the Tejano music scene.
Reyna began her singing career performing at local quinceañeras and weddings in 1988. While attending Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, in 1991, she met arranger Noel Hernandez. The following year, in 1992, Reyna decided to leave her studies to pursue music full-time.
