Japandroids are a Canadian rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia, consisting of Brian King (guitar, vocals) and David Prowse (drums, vocals).
Formed in 2006, the band rose to prominence following the release of their debut album, Post-Nothing (2009).
Japandroids’ music has been described as “one-part classic rock, one-part punk”, due to their blending of classic rock influences, such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, with punk rock influences, such as the Replacements and Hüsker Dü.

Formed in 2006, their journey began with a shared love of music that blossomed at the University of Victoria. They bonded over live shows and eventually decided to create their own. Frustrated by the local music scene, they took a DIY approach, self-releasing two EPs, “All Lies” (2007) and “Lullaby Death Jams” (2008).
Their relentless energy and raw talent started turning heads. In 2009, their debut album, “Post-Nothing,” landed them on the radar of independent label Unfamiliar Records. The album, with anthems like “Young Hearts Spark Fire,” garnered critical acclaim and propelled them to a wider audience.
Never ones to rest on their laurels, Japandroids hit the road hard, building a reputation for electrifying live performances. This momentum fueled the creation of their sophomore album, “Celebration Rock,” released in 2012. The album exploded, earning them accolades like “Band of the Year” from Spin magazine and a spot on Rolling Stone’s “10 Coolest Summer Albums of All Time” list.
“Celebration Rock” cemented their place in the Indie rock scene. While they took a hiatus after extensive touring, Japandroids returned in 2017 with “Near to the Wild Heart of Life,” showcasing a more polished sound without losing their signature intensity. Japandroids toured heavily in support of Near to the Wild Heart of Life, performing more than 150 shows in 23 countries between October 2016 and October 2018. The Near to the Wild Heart of Life Tour consisted of 12 individual legs across North America, Europe, and Oceania, including numerous festival appearances: South by Southwest, Shaky Knees Music Festival, Sasquatch!, Governors Ball, Pitchfork Music Festival, and Foo Fighters’ Cal Jam in the United States, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Latitude, End of the Road, Electric Picnic, Primavera Sound, Paredes de Coura, NOS Alive in Europe, Corona Capital in Mexico, and Meredith Music Festival in Australia.
Japandroids are a testament to the power of a duo. With just two members, they create a wall of sound and an infectious energy that continues to ignite audiences worldwide.
Their discography includes three studio albums, one compilation album, two extended plays, ten singles, and two music videos.
