The Motet is an American funk, soul, and jazz-influenced group based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1998 by drummer and bandleader Dave Watts, the group has released seven studio albums, including their 2014 self-titled album, which was co-written and produced by all members.
The band’s history dates back to 1998 when they first performed together on Halloween 1998, incorporating elements of funk, jazz, folk, and world music into their sound. Watts wrote and arranged most of their early music for a rotating lineup of musicians, throwing energetic local dance parties.

Their debut release, Breathe, was self-released in 1999, and their second album, Play, was released in 2001. The band also released their first record, Live, in 2002, and Music for Life in 2004.
In 2006, The Motet released their studio album Instrumental Dissent. Allmusic gave the album a largely positive review, with Allmusic praising the production and audio quality.
In 2009, The Motet released their self-released album Dig Deep, featuring compositions written and arranged by Watts and an electronica sound added by drummer Scott Messersmith. Allmusic gave Dig Deep 3/5 stars, stating that the album showcased the band’s growth as individuals and as an unstoppable funk machine.

In 2014, The Motet released their seventh studio album, The Motet, in February 2014. Each member of the band contributed to the writing process, with hundreds of hours spent in the studio creating vintage funk sounds.
The album was recorded at various studios and venues, with Eric Krasno of Soullive producing the record and contributing two songs, “So High” and “Know It Too Well.”
In 2019, The Motet released their final album, Death or Devotion, which was released in the beginning of 2019. The Motet continues to tour nationally and perform at various festivals, showcasing their growth as individuals and as an unstoppable funk machine.
The Motet has performed at various festivals and continues to tour nationally. The band has performed a series of concerts on Halloween weekend covering the music of one particular band and dressing the part. Examples have included Earth, Wind, and Fire, Tower of Power, Jamiroquai and Stevie Wonder.
