Chromeo is a Canadian electro-funk duo formed by childhood friends David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel. The duo met in Montreal, Canada, during their teenage years and bonded over their shared love for 1980s funk, rock, and hip-hop. Dave 1 pursued an academic career in literature, while P-Thugg had a background in jazz and electronic production. Their mutual passion for music led them to collaborate and eventually form Chromeo in 2002.
Musical Style and Influences
Chromeo’s sound is a modern take on 1980s funk and disco, heavily influenced by artists like Prince, Hall & Oates, Zapp, and Parliament-Funkadelic. Their signature style blends funky basslines, talkbox vocals, and catchy melodies, infused with a retro-futuristic aesthetic.

Breakthrough Success: Fancy Footwork (2007)
Their second album, Fancy Footwork, released in 2007, became a turning point for the duo. The album featured dancefloor anthems like “Tenderoni,” “Bonafied Lovin’,” and “Fancy Footwork,” which helped Chromeo gain an international following. Their retro yet fresh sound resonated with indie dance fans, and the album solidified their reputation as pioneers of the “hipster funk” movement.

With their third album, Business Casual, Chromeo continued refining their funky, synth-driven sound. Released in 2010, the album included tracks like “Night by Night” and “Hot Mess,” which further expanded their reach. Their growing popularity led them to perform at major music festivals, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo.
Peak of Success: White Women (2014)
