Hire: The Original Lakeside
Lakeside, hailing from Dayton, Ohio—dubbed “The Land of Funk”—began their rise to fame in 1977 with their self-titled debut album and the single “If I Didn’t Have You.” Their appearance on Soul Train performing “Shine On” marked a pivotal moment. With the addition of drummer Fred Alexander Jr., Lakeside was poised for greater success and ultimately chose to sign with Solar Records, owned by Dick Griffey, over Whitfield Records. Griffey, who had managed Lakeside since 1975, offered the band creative freedom to write and co-produce their music.
In 1978, Lakeside released their album “Shot of Love” under Solar Records, featuring the hit single “It’s All the Way Live,” which reached #4 on the R&B charts. The band’s lineup included Marvin Craig, Fred Alexander, Fred Lewis, Steve Shockley, Norman Beavers, Otis Stokes, Mark Wood, Tiemeyer McCain, and Thomas Shelby. Known for their themed album covers and costumes, Lakeside continued to gain popularity.

Their 1980 album “Fantastic Voyage” featured the title track, which became their biggest hit, topping the R&B charts and reaching #55 on the pop charts. The following album, “Your Wish Is My Command,” included a successful cover of The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which peaked at #5 on the R&B charts. Lakeside produced several more successful albums and hits, such as “Raid,” “Outrageous,” and “Real Love,” solidifying their place in R&B and funk music.
In 2015, the group rebranded as THE ORIGINAL LAKESIDE, featuring six original members and new lead vocalist Eddie Guyton. They were honored with a biography on TV One’s “Unsung” and included in the National Museum of African American History and Culture for their contributions to funk and R&B. Today, THE ORIGINAL LAKESIDE continues to delight fans with their classic hits and energetic performances.
