Although less frequently requested, the following might be considered, also.

  • A non-performance personal appearance.

An example would be to hire a celebrity to attend a private or corporate party as simply a (non-performing) guest to mingle with other guests, or to hire the celebrity to do a meet-and-greet at your party.

  • A virtual performance.

A virtual performance is a live or recorded show—such as a concert, play, dance, comedy act, or other artistic presentation—that is broadcast or streamed online instead of being performed in front of a physical audience. Artists perform live from a studio, venue, or even their homes and stream the show on platforms like YouTube, Twitch, or Instagram Live. Essentially, a virtual performance brings entertainment to audiences through the internet rather than in-person venues.

The Laid-Back Legends of Ska-Punk and SoCal Rock

Sublime is one of the most influential alternative bands to emerge from Southern California, known for blending ska, punk, reggae, hip-hop, and rock into a sound that defined the 1990s SoCal music scene. Their music captured a carefree beach vibe while addressing themes of love, rebellion, addiction, and social struggle, making Sublime a lasting cultural force decades after their peak.

Early Formation and Southern California Roots

Sublime was formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California. The original lineup consisted of vocalist and guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh. Growing up in a coastal environment heavily influenced by punk rock, reggae, and skate culture, the band developed a unique style rooted in musical freedom rather than genre rules.

Bradley Nowell’s distinctive voice and charismatic songwriting became the band’s creative core. Drawing inspiration from artists like Bad Religion, Minutemen, Toots and the Maytals, and Bob Marley, Sublime created a raw, genre-blending sound that resonated deeply with underground audiences.

Breakthrough Albums and Rising Popularity

Sublime released their debut album 40oz. to Freedom in 1992, which became a cult classic through grassroots promotion and constant touring. Songs like “Date Rape,” “Smoke Two Joints,” and “Badfish” showcased their ability to seamlessly mix punk aggression with reggae grooves and melodic hooks.

Their second album, Robbin’ the Hood (1994), leaned further into experimentation, incorporating lo-fi recordings, dub influences, and spoken-word interludes. Though unconventional, the album strengthened Sublime’s reputation as fearless innovators within alternative music.

Mainstream Success and Tragic Loss

In 1996, Sublime released their self-titled album Sublime, which propelled the band into mainstream success. Featuring iconic tracks such as “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way,” the album received heavy radio play and introduced Sublime to a global audience.

Tragically, just two months before the album’s release, Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose at the age of 28. His death marked a devastating turning point for the band and effectively ended Sublime’s original run. Despite this loss, the album became a massive success, solidifying Sublime’s legacy.

Musical Style and Cultural Impact

Sublime’s sound is defined by its effortless fusion of ska rhythms, punk energy, reggae grooves, and hip-hop attitude. Their music often paired upbeat melodies with introspective or socially conscious lyrics, creating a contrast that resonated with fans across generations.

Beyond music, Sublime became synonymous with 1990s beach culture, skateboarding, and alternative youth movements. Their DIY ethos and genre-defying approach influenced countless bands in ska-punk, reggae-rock, and alternative scenes.

Legacy and Continued Influence

Following Nowell’s passing, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh eventually formed Long Beach Dub Allstars and later reunited with Rome Ramirez under the name Sublime with Rome. While the lineup evolved, the original Sublime catalog continues to attract new listeners and maintain a strong presence in popular culture.

Today, Sublime is remembered as one of the most iconic alternative bands of all time. Their music remains a staple of rock radio, playlists, and live performances, ensuring that Bradley Nowell’s voice and vision live on.

Why Sublime Still Matters

Sublime’s enduring appeal lies in their authenticity. Their music feels honest, unfiltered, and timeless, capturing the spirit of freedom and rebellion that defines great rock bands. Decades later, Sublime continues to influence artists and inspire fans, proving that their sound is not just a product of the 1990s, but a permanent part of modern music history.

Hits include:

  • What I Got
  • Santeria
  • Wrong Way
  • Doin’ Time
  • Feel Like That (featuring Stick Figure)
  • Ensenada

Their discography includes three studio albums, as well as a live album, five compilation albums, three EPs, one box set, five official singles, tribute albums and nine singles.

How is the fee of Sublime determined?

✅ Sublime fee determination

Sublime’s manager determines the artist’s concert fee (also known as a guarantee) by evaluating a combination of business, market, and logistical factors.

Here’s a breakdown of key elements considered:

1. Sublime’s Popularity and Demand

  • Ticket Sales History: How many tickets they’ve sold recently in the same market or similar ones.

  • Streaming & Radio Metrics: Spotify/Apple Music numbers, YouTube views, Shazam stats, radio spins.

  • Social Media Following & Engagement: Followers, reach, and how active and loyal the fan base is.

2. Market Strength

  • City or Region: Artists can command higher fees in cities where they are more popular.

  • Venue Size: Bigger venues mean more ticket sales and higher potential revenue.

  • Local Competition: Is the artist competing with other events nearby on the same date?

3. Sublime Touring Expenses

  • Band & Crew Payroll: Salaries, per diems, union rates.

  • Production Costs: Lights, sound, transportation, backline, hotel, security, etc.

  • Travel: Flights, buses, fuel, lodging. Fees are often higher for more distant or logistically complex locations.

4. Type of Event

  • Hard Ticket Show: The artist is the main draw; ticket sales drive revenue. The fee is based on expected gross revenue minus expenses.

  • Festival or Fair: Often pay higher flat fees as the event assumes ticket risk.

  • Corporate or Private Event: Typically, higher pricing due to exclusivity and often minimal promotional benefit.

5. Promoter Offer and Negotiation

  • The manager evaluates received offers and may negotiate elements to modify the fee or reduce expenses.

  • Promoters/Private Buyers typically present a formal offer sheet that includes:

  • Guarantee (flat fee): Minimum the artist gets paid.

  • Backend or Bonus: Extra earnings based on ticket sales after breakeven. (Typically, this is not applicable to private/corporate events.)

  • Expenses: Travel, accommodations, hospitality, etc.

6. Comparing Fees

  • Managers often compare fees of similar-level artists to stay competitive in pricing.

7. Sublime Routing Considerations

  • If the date fits smoothly into a larger tour routing, they might accept a lower fee.

  • If it’s a one-off or out-of-the-way show, the fee might be higher to justify the extra time and effort.
