Doechii, born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon in 1998, is a rising star in the world of rap and R&B. Hailing from Tampa, Florida, her journey to the spotlight is a blend of artistic exploration and viral success.
Doechii‘s artistic foundation was laid early. Raised in Tampa, she honed her performing skills through ballet, tap, acting, and even gymnastics. This love for performance found a new outlet in high school, where she began writing poetry and experimenting with rap.
By 2016, Doechii, then known as Iamdoechii, started putting her music out there on SoundCloud. Her debut single, “Girls,” marked the beginning of her musical journey. She continued to experiment, releasing the compilation “Coven Music Session, Vol. 1” in 2019, followed by the single “Spookie Coochie.”
Doechii‘s big break came in 2020 with the release of her debut EP, “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” The self-funded project showcased her genre-bending style, mixing pop, dance, and hip-hop. It was a single from this EP, the quirky and catchy “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” that rocketed to virality on TikTok in 2021. This exposure grabbed the attention of record labels, and Doechii landed a history-making deal with Top Dawg Entertainment, becoming the imprint’s first female rapper. She also signed with Capitol Records in a joint venture.
Since signing with Top Dawg, Doechii has continued to impress. In 2022, she released her second EP, “She/Her/Black Bitch,” further establishing her bold voice and creative vision. Her 2023 single “What It Is (Block Boy)” featuring Kodak Black became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry and achieved platinum certification.
Doechii‘s journey is far from over. With her talent, captivating performances (as seen in the visually striking video for “Crazy”), and affiliation with a powerhouse label, she is poised to become a major force in the music industry.
Her discography includes three mixtapes, two extended plays, and 23 singles (including six as a featured artist).
