Devo is an American rock band from Akron, Ohio, formed in 1973. Their classic lineup consisted of two sets of brothers, the Mothersbaughs (Mark and Bob) and the Casales (Gerald and Bob), along with Alan Myers. The band had a No. 14 Billboard chart hit in 1980 with the single “Whip It”, the song that gave the band mainstream popularity.  Their discography includes 25 singles and 9 studio albums.

Devo music and stage shows mingle kitsch science fiction themes, deadpan surrealist humor and mordantly satirical social commentary. Their early, pre-Warner Bros. dissonant songs use synthetic instrumentation and time signatures proven influential on subsequent popular music, particularly new wave, industrial, and alternative rock artists.

Devo (most enthusiastically Gerald Casale) was also a pioneer of the music video, creating clips for the LaserDisc format, with “Whip It” getting heavy airplay in the early days of MTV.  He also worked with bands including Rush, Soundgarden, Silverchair and Foo Fighters as a director of music videos.

Devo recorded a number of songs for various films and compilations, including a new recording of “Girl U Want” on the soundtrack to the 1995 film Tank Girl and a cover of the Nine Inch Nails hit “Head Like a Hole” for the 1996 North American version of the film Supercop.

Devo were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, 2021 and 2022.

Here is a list of some of their notable awards and accolades:

  • In 1978, DEVO was nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy Award.
  • In 1980, DEVO won the Video of the Year award at the first annual MTV Video Music Awards for their music video for the song “Whip It.”
  • In 1982, DEVO was nominated for the Best Special Effects award at the 1982 Grammy Awards for the music video for the song “Working in the Coal Mine.”
