Her great-uncle was the celebrated British actor Sir Dirk Bogarde, which exposed her to the arts from an early age. She began playing piano at just seven years old, discovering her passion for music and songwriting by age eight. With a heritage that includes Dutch and Belgian ancestry, Birdy’s diverse cultural background has influenced her unique sound and lyrical depth.
Breakthrough: Viral Success with “Skinny Love”
In 2011, at only 14 years old, Birdy gained worldwide attention when her cover of Bon Iver‘s “Skinny Love” went viral. The track, with its haunting simplicity, showcased her emotive voice and introduced her to audiences across Europe and beyond. It topped charts and was a favorite on UK radio stations, marking her official entry into the music industry as an emerging indie sensation.

On 22 January 2021, Birdy announced her fourth album, Young Heart, via her social media. It was released on 30 April and features 16 tracks. On the same day as the announcement, “Surrender”, the first single from Young Heart was released. Her second single, “Loneliness” was released on 12 February. Her favorite songs on the album are “Evergreen,” “Little Blue,” “Nobody Knows Me Like You Do,” and “Young Heart.”
